"Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint." (Proverbs 29:18) In other words, you need to know your "why" before you focus on your "what." You need to know the reason you are here in the first place, then you will find greater focus and meaning in the things you do, helping you stay on track long term. At Wellspring Church, we believe Jesus has given us a clear reason to be here in Leicester and a clear way to live as His people. Our Purpose explains why we are here, and our Practice expands on what we are called to do.
Our Purpose
"A source of God’s life, hope and healing in the community and beyond."
Wellspring means the source of a spring or stream, a continual or abundant supply of something. This mirrors the vison Ezekiel saw in the Old Testament of a river flowing from God’s temple bringing life, salvation and healing wherever it went. Today the church is the temple of God and the river is the Holy Spirit who works in and through us to bring the life of Jesus Christ wherever we are.
Our Practice
Jesus modelled a way of life that He called His disciples to follow. Just as a river often builds momentum from tributaries, these are the things we seek to put into practice in our lives to help us grow as disciples of Jesus and enable the Holy Spirit to keep flowing in and through us.
- Scripture:
We read the Bible, we teach the Bible and we allow the Bible to shape how we live our lives because it is God’s word to us today. It reveals who God is and what He is like, and ultimately points us to Jesus as the perfect revelation of Himself.
- Prayer:
At its very core, Christianity is about relationship with God. Any relationship needs good communication to thrive and prayer is how we communicate with God. Therefore, we prioritise prayer, both together as a church and as individuals.
- Worship:
Everything we do has the potential to be an act of worship, but when we gather together as a church to bring our praise and devotion to God through music and song, He loves to draw near to us through the Holy Spirit. It’s often at these times He makes more of His presence and power known amongst us.
- Family:
The Bible uses the language of family to describe the church because following Jesus was never meant to be done alone. It’s through relating to God as Father and one another as brothers and sisters in Christ that we grow to become more like Jesus. This is why we are committed to our regular gatherings and intentionally look to share our lives with one another.
- Generosity:
There is something about the good news of Jesus that inspires generosity. When we understand that God freely gave us His dearly loved son, we respond by giving out of the things that are most valuable to us – our time, money and other resources – for the benefit of His Kingdom on earth and other people around us.
- Compassion:
Jesus often showed compassion. But compassion is more than just an emotion, it involves action. Compassion sees and feels another person’s pain or distress, then moves to help them as an expression of love. That is why we are committed to running projects together as a church that seek to help those in need, and look to personally demonstrate God’s love to those around us in everyday life.
- Witness:
Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses in the city, the region and the nations. Today we aim to do this where we are in 3 ways: Words – we speak the good news through testimonies and sharing the gospel. Works – we show the good news by the way we live and the way we love people around us. Wonders – we offer to pray for people believing that God wants to draw them into an encounter with Him.
